Free Amazon Backend Search Terms Checker

Amazon counts search terms in bytes, and one byte over 249 means the whole field is ignored. Paste yours to see the real byte count, what is wasting space, and a cleaned version to copy.

THE RULE

How Amazon reads backend search terms

The search terms field is where you put the words shoppers use that do not belong in your visible copy: synonyms, alternate spellings, abbreviations and long-tail phrases. Amazon indexes them for search, but only while the field is within its limit: 249 bytes on US, Canada, UK and EU marketplaces.

The limit is strict. Go one byte over and Amazon ignores the entire field. Because accented and non-Latin characters take two or three bytes each, a character count can look safe when the byte count is not.

With titles now capped at 75 characters (July 27, 2026), backend terms carry more of your keyword coverage than before. Words cut from a title can still be indexed here, as long as every byte earns its place.

How to fill the field well

  1. Separate with spaces only. No commas or semicolons.
  2. Use each word once. Word order and repetition do not add relevance.
  3. Skip words already in your title and bullets. They are indexed already.
  4. Add what shoppers type, not what you call it. Synonyms, spelling variants, use cases.
  5. Leave out ASINs, other brands and claims. They are against Amazon's guidance.
QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

The search terms field is limited to 249 bytes on Amazon US, Canada, UK and the EU marketplaces, 500 bytes in Japan and 200 bytes in India. If the field is over the limit, Amazon does not index any of it, not just the overflow.
Plain English letters, numbers and spaces are one byte each, but accented letters (é, ü) take two bytes and many other scripts take three. A field that looks like 240 characters can be well over 249 bytes, which is why a character counter is not enough.
No. Separate terms with single spaces. Commas, semicolons and other punctuation are not needed for matching and spend bytes you could use for more terms.
No. Amazon already indexes the words in your title and other listing fields, so repeating them in search terms only uses up bytes. Use the field for synonyms, alternate spellings, abbreviations and long-tail terms that do not fit elsewhere.
Amazon’s guidance excludes ASINs, other brands’ names, subjective claims such as “best” or “amazing”, temporary statements such as “new” or “on sale”, and offensive terms. Filler words like “a”, “the”, “for” and “with” are unnecessary.
